Since 1893, "The Chiefs" have been relied upon by subordinates and superiors alike for their personal example, technical expertise and above all, their unique leadership capabilities. As the induction process for newly selected Chief Petty Officers is now underway throughout the US Navy, we thought it appropriate to inaugurate "The Chief" in honor and recognition of all past and present CPOs. Thanks to them and their families for their self-sacrifice, ability to adapt, tireless dedication to mission and devotion to country.

The Bear


From CrossFit East Sacramento:

"The Bear Complex"

7 Continuous Sets, no rest or regripping on the floor:
Power Clean
Front Squat
Jerk
Back Squat
Jerk From Behind Head

*Do 5 Rounds for a max weight with as much rest as needed between. Each set starts from the floor and the bar must not come to rest on the ground between sets. Movements may be combined any way as long as the bar starts on the ground, is cleaned to a front rack position and squatted to full depth, bar goes overhead, on the back for a full back squat and back overhead. So you may squat clean to thruster and back squat to thruster. See video below.

Here are some good pictures of Jerry and me at CrossFit Marina on Friday morning before our JEI Meet.

DACA swam great this weekend! With a number of new US Open cuts, best times, and top 8 Finishes. Not to mention we had 2 swimmers (Shayne Fleming and Erich Peske) make it on the awards stands with top 3 finishes! SJSU also had some great swims, with a number of best times including Amy Friedhoff dropping 3 seconds in the 800 Free, Meghan McCurley having impressive consolation finals swims in the 50 and 100 Free, and Hannah Tringham finishing off the meet with a 2:19 200 Fly!

Every 1:30 sec you must stop and complete 5 Knee to elbow and 5 24" Box Jumps to buy back in. The clock never stops running for the Knee to elbows and Box Jumps. Thus if it takes you 30 seconds to complete the 10 reps then you only have one minute left to do hang power cleans.

Affiliate Throwdown in S.F.


The Team competition was awesome in San Francisco! The wod was as follows:

At turn around every teammate must do 30 burpees. If you drop the pole every teammate must do 20 burpee penalty.

Getting some serious work done! Now that's what hard work looks like.


Ten rounds for time of:

3 Weighted Pull-ups, 45 pounds
5 Strict Pull-ups
7 Kipping Pull-up

For weighted pull-ups place a 45 pound dumbbell between the legs above crossed ankles and jettison the dumbbell after third rep and continue with strict pull-ups and then the kipping pull-ups. Coming off the bar or going to ground constitutes termination of a set.

Day 1 Workouts

Workout A*

For time:

Row 500m
30 Burpees
10 Shoulder-to-Overhead (Men: 165#, Women: 95#)

It's up to you to decide on the technique to employ for the shoulder-to-overhead movement (shoulder press, push press, push jerk, etc.). Efficient technique will be rewarded.

Scaled Version:

Row 500m
30 Burpees
10 Shoulder-to-Overhead (Men: 105#, Women: 65#)

* There will be a ten-minute cap for this workout.


Workout B

Max reps in 10 minutes of:

Muscle-Up
Ground-to-Shoulder (Male: 185#, Female: 105#)

It's up to you to decide on the technique to employ for the ground-to-shoulder movement (power clean, squat clean, deadlift-and-curl, etc.). Efficient technique will be rewarded.


Qualifier for male athletes – 10 reps of each exercise must be completed
Qualifier for female athletes – 4 reps of each exercise must be completed


The qualifier number means that for the workout to count, you must complete at least that number of reps for each exercise by the time the workout is done. If you cannot get the qualifier number in 10 minutes, the workout will not count as Rx'd. You can think of the qualifier number as a buy-in amount.

You can allocate reps between the two exercises however you want, as long as you meet the qualifier number for both exercises (e.g., you could go for all ten reps of muscle-ups first, then go for cleans, or you could alternate between the two exercises until you get ten of both, or do any number of other scenarios).

Ground-to-Shoulder (Male: 115#, Female: 75#)


Other Important Details

Workout A and Workout B will be run simultaneously. The first heat for both workouts will begin at 9am and run in 20-minute increments thereafter. There will be a morning session from 9am to 12pm, followed by a 1-hour break. Competitors will switch workouts and the afternoon session will then run from 1pm to 4pm.

The top 40 males and top 20 females from Day 1 will move on to compete in the Day 2 workout. The Day 2 workout will be announced at the end of Day 1. No scaling will be allowed for the Day 2 workout.

Heat assignments will be posted on this blog on Wednesday night, April 29. This means that you'll know exactly when you'll be going. Workouts and heats will be randomly assigned.

Oakland SWAT Sergeant Daniel Sakai, age 35, was killed on March 21, 2009 in the line of duty along with fellow officers Sergeant Ervin Romans, Sergeant Mark Dunakin, and Officer John Hege. Daniel is survived by wife Jenni and daughter Jojiye.
